The women of Hamlet, Ophelia and Gertrude are obedient to and controlled by the men in their lives. Oblivious, they are consumed by the corruption occurring in the State of Denmark.
In this scene Gertrude is talking to Hamlet. He is making snide and punning comments towards his mother. Gertrude does nothing and she ignores her son remarks. This demonstrates Gertrude is a weak character and does not stick up for herself to the men in her life.
In this scene Hamlet has added an unexpected scene in a play that is going to be presented in front of the king. The added scene is about Claudius killing his brother, King Hamlet by pouring poison in his ear. From the picture the facial expressions prove my thesis that Gertrude is oblivious to the corruption around her. Claudius's Facial expression appears like he is trying to hide his nerves while Gertrude is oblivious to the message of the play and thinks it's funny.
In this scene Hamlet makes rude and inappropriate remarks towards Ophelia in front of the king, queen and Polonius. These remarks really hurt her feelings and embarrass her. Instead of sticking up for herself and saying something to Hamlet, she says nothing about it. She acts civil and proceeds to sit behind him and hold him while he video tapes. This shows that Ophelia is submissive and is controlled by the men in her life.
In this scene Gertrude discovers her first husband was murdered. Hamlet is very aggressive and violent towards his mother. She is very afraid of Hamlet and she tries to run away from him. Hamlet forcefully tells her to sit down and she does. Even though Gertrude feared for her life. This shows that she is obedient and controlled by the men in her life.
